“Au Naturale”

When the summer heat rolls in most women hate the thought of putting daily makeup on to then just sweat it off. We connect this season with breakouts because of the excessive perspiration that is felt in our daily routine. Most women I speak to during their facial consultation say that they don’t like makeup or don’t wear it in the summer because they feel it breaks them out.

In my professional opinion I wouldn’t say it’s the excessive sweating that leads to congested skin, but the proper cleansing at the beginning and the end of the day may have more to do with it. I myself do not like a heavy “made up” face because of the heat, so I take a simpler approach in the summer months and go “au naturale”. First, be sure you are cleansing adequately with a ph balanced cleanser that thoroughly dissolves makeup and oil.  Using a Clarisonic with your cleanser is the best way to ensure the pores are deeply cleansed. Second, use a tinted spf moisturizer. Most tinted moisturizers have just enough sheer coverage to blend the pinks and browns in the skin. Add a light eye and lip color and you are good to go! This is a light, fresh version of skincare that helps you look your best in the heat without the worry of going without makeup entirely.

Our Skin in the Winter Months

As we enter the winter months and the heat is turned on we can instantly feel the difference in our skin. You may notice it feels  dry and tight. With the change of temperature we need to change up our skin care as well. We need to help our skin hold in its water content. Some ways to help with this is when you shower,  lightly pat dry your face or body and immediately apply your moisturizer which helps seal in the water. Also, a richer more hydrating moisturizer may be in order. Using a light serum for hydrating in the summer months may not be enough in the winter months. So you want to try lash extensions?

Lash extensions are all the craze, who has time for mascara and applying falsies everyday? Individual lash extensions cut out the hassle. They give you either a natural or dramatic look depending on your preference for up to two to three weeks. There are a few different types of lash extensions, synthetic, silk, and mink. All are applied to each individual natural lash depending on what look you are trying to achieve. There are also a few different types of glues depending on your sensitivity. A sensitivity test can be done to rule out any allergies to glue. All hair on our bodies go through three growth stages, which is why it is important to go to a certified lash technician because they know where and which ones to apply, and proper products and procedures; causing no damage to your eyelashes!

“My pores are so huge!”

Have you ever studied your skin in a mirror and notice every pore and wrinkle that are emerging on a weekly basis? We’ve all been there. We over analyzing every line, spot or acne scar. One of my biggest complaints I hear during a facial consultation is how women hate their large pores. Can we shrink pores? No, but we can minimize the appearance of them. The pore opens up wider as our skin loses elastin. Elastin is broken down by free radical damage due to external factors such as sun and chemicals. Internal factors are our diet, genetics and smoking. Some simple ways to reduce the pore size is to exfoliate and add a retinol to your regimen. If you can exfoliate with a glycolic or enzyme mask once a week it keeps the dead skin cell layer sloughing off to reveal smoother, softer skin. The retinol stimulates collagen which help with the tone. The more you are consistent in exfoliation and using cosmeceutical grade products the quicker you renew healthy skin cells. Those healthy cells replace the dead skin cell layer. The quicker the cells turn over the more youthful qualities your skin will begin to reveal. Remember, people are not looking at you through a 10 times magnification mirror. They are looking at you about three feet away. All the details of your aging skin are for your eyes only. Be consistent with your products, slow and steady wins the race. Your best measure is seeing your friends who don’t take care of their skin compared to you who is, you will be thankful you started sooner rather than later.

Waxing… down under FAQ

Bathing suit season is upon us and  you may be wondering if you need to step up your grooming game in your more sensitive areas. Along with underarm and leg waxing, a bikini wax or Brazilian wax will allow you to feel confidently hair free this summer.

So here are some of our most frequently asked questions when it comes to waxing below the belt:

  1. What is the difference between a Bikini Wax, a Full Bikini Wax and a Brazilian Wax?
    Removes the hair just to the pantie line. Imagine you are wearing a classic pair of underwear, a Bikini wax would remove the hair that comes outside of your panty line. This does not include any hair from the inner thigh area.

    Full Bikini
    Removes the hair just inside the panty line and inner thigh area. This would remove the same as a Bikini wax, plus about one inch just inside the pantie line, plus hair coming out from the inner thigh to pantie line.

    Anything more than a Full Bikini. Can include all hair being removed. A Brazilian wax does not necessarily mean that all the hair is removed, although you can go for it all. This allows the client to customize the amount of hair they want left. 
  2. How long will my wax last? What is the maintenance like?
    There are three stages of hair growth, so each time you get a waxing service you are never removing ALL the hair from that area. Meaning there are some hairs that are under the surface waiting to make their appearance, plus the hair that is already out and ready to be waxed. Once you have received 3-4 waxing services about 3 weeks apart you should, theoretically, have waxed all of the hair. After that, your waxes will last longer, closer to 4-6 weeks.
  3. Will it hurt?
    Pain for waxing services can vary person to person. Again, though, the more often you get waxing done, the less hair that needs to be removed and thus it will hurt less. If you are concerned about pain, or know that these services are painful for you to receive, you can take a pain reliever such as Tylenol before your service.
  4. What do I or don’t I wear to my appointment?
    For a bikini wax or a full bikini wax you can wear your own underwear for the appointment, preferably a thong type, or we can provide a disposable pair of underwear. Some clients like to wear the same pair from home for their waxes since sometimes wax residue can be left on the fabric.
    For a Brazilian wax, your Esthetician will give you a towel to cover up with and will ask you to remove your bottoms completely.
